Request an Investigation
Adult Protective Services (APS) investigates reports of adults aged 60 and older who live independently in Delaware County, Ohio, and are in danger of harm from themselves or others. To request an investigation of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, call the Adult Protective Services referral line:
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.: (740) 833-2340 or 1-800-899-3180
Weekdays after 4:30 p.m., weekends, or holidays: (740) 833-2800 (Delaware County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Department's non-emergency number)
When calling it is helpful to provide the following information, which will help the APS worker in the investigation:
1. The person’s full legal name, phone number, address, and current location.
2. The age of the person or date of birth, and any known physical or mental limitations.
3. The name and phone number of a caregiver or support service in the home, if present.
4. Current, accurate, and detailed information concerning the nature of the alleged abuse, neglect or exploitation.
All referrals will be screened to determine the appropriate course of action. If an APS investigation is indicated, this will be initiated within 24 hours in the case of an emergency, and within 3 business days for a non-emergency investigation.
APS records are private and confidential and can only be released by court order to anyone other than the alleged victim and/or his or her representative. The identification of a referral source is not revealed to the client or anyone involved in the case. Delaware County APS respects the right of adults to make personal choices and decisions until such time that they delegate or a court of law grants that responsibility to someone else.
Delaware County uses the least restrictive alternative when developing solutions to elder abuse, using community-based services in preference to institutionalization, and involving family members in problem solving as appropriate.
If you have any questions regarding Adult Protective Services or elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, please contact the APS worker at (740) 833-2340.
